Imperial County is located in the Imperial Valley, bordering both Arizona and Mexico. Although this region is a desert, with high temperatures and low average rainfall of three inches (seventy-five mm) per year, the economy is heavily based on agriculture due to irrigation supplied wholly from the Colorado River via the All-American Canal.
The county has an area of 4,481.7 square miles. Within the county are 7 incorporated cities and ten unincorporated communities and rural areas.
The incorporated cities are Brawley, Calexico, Calipatria, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, and Westmorland.
The unincorporated communities are Bombay Beach, Desert Shores, Heber, Niland, Ocotillo, Palo Verde, Salton City, Salton Sea Beach, Seeley, and Winterhaven.
El Centro is the largest city and County seat for Imperial County.
